Lung Cancer:

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the lungs. They typically start in the cells lining the bronchi and parts of the lung such as the bronchioles or alveoli.

Symptoms:

  • Changes to a person’s voice, such as hoarseness
  • Frequent chest infections, such as bronchitis or pneumonia
  • Swelling in the lymph nodes in the middle of the chest
  • A lingering cough
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing

 

Few other symptoms show up after sometime, namely,

  • Severe chest pain
  • Bone pain and bone fractures
  • Headaches
  • Coughing up blood
  • Blood clots
  • Appetite loss and weight loss
  • Fatigue

 

Causes:

  • Smoking
  • Exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Previous radiation therapy
  • Exposure to radon gas
  • Exposure to asbestos and other carcinogens
  • Family history of lung cancer

 

Preventing Lung Cancer:

  • Stop smoking
  • Avoid carcinogens at work
  • Eat a diet full of fruits and vegetables
  • Exercise most days of the week.
  • Avoid exposure to occupational agents that are carcinogenic to the lungs
